GUIDE IN 10 STEPS FOR CHILD SAFETY
We’ve developed a practical 10-step safety guide for parents and caregivers to protect the well-being of children against abductions, disappearances, runaways, and other threats. Child safety is a shared and ongoing commitment. Strike the right balance between empowering children to protect themselves while giving them the freedom to grow and explore. Adapt each step based on the child’s age and your family’s unique circumstances.
1. Open Communication: Build a foundation of trust where children feel completely safe sharing their experiences and worries. Encourage honest, ongoing conversations about personal boundaries and safety.
2. Safety Education: Help children recognize dangerous situations before they occur. Walk them through real-world scenarios so they understand how to respond with confidence.
3. Personal Information: Make sure every child knows their full name, home address, and a parent’s or guardian’s contact number — critical details they can share if they ever need help.
4. Trusted Contacts: Give children a short list of reliable adults they can reach out to in an emergency, along with a clear reminder to avoid engaging with strangers.
5. Supervision: Stay actively involved in your child’s online and offline life. Set boundaries for screen time and ensure they understand what to do when something makes them feel unsafe.
6. Routines and Planning: Consistent daily routines help children feel grounded and know what to expect. Whenever plans shift, communicate those changes clearly and promptly.
7. Online Safety: Teach children the real risks of the internet — including sharing personal details, photographs, or their location. Apply parental controls and check in on their digital habits regularly.
8. Safe Places: Let children know which places and people are safe to turn to when they feel lost or frightened — such as a police officer, a school teacher, or a trusted store employee.
9. Emergency Plan: Create a clear action plan for unexpected situations, covering how to handle separation in public and the right steps to take when seeking help from others.
10. Role Model Behavior: Children learn by watching. Demonstrate calm, responsible decision-making in your own life and show them how to approach challenging situations with a steady mindset.
