FINDING MISSING CHILDREN
Missing Children Global Network is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization, established in 2009 in Miami-Dade, Florida, that investigates and solves missing children cases, at no cost to their families, with the use of private investigators and certified volunteer investigators. Moreover, the organization reduces child disappearance through education and community prevention and awareness projects.
STATISTICS
When a child is reported missing to law enforcement, in the US, federal law requires that the child be entered into the FBI’s National Crime Information Center (NCIC). The following is the statistics of the last few years:
2022: 359,094 minors were reported missing
2021: 337,195 minors were reported missing
2020: 365,348 minors were reported missing
2019: 421,394 minors were reported missing
2018: 424,066 minors were reported missing

GUIDE IN 10 STEPS FOR CHILD SAFETY
We present a 10-step guide for parents or caregivers to be aware of the safety and well-being of a minor in the face of possible abductions, disappearances, runaways, and other risks. Remember that safety is a shared and ongoing responsibility. Maintain a balance between teaching the child to protect themselves and allowing them to explore and develop. Adapting these steps according to the child’s age and family circumstances is essential.
1. Open Communication: Establish an environment of trust where the child feels comfortable sharing their concerns and experiences. Encourage open communication about personal and safety topics.
2. Safety Education: Teach the child about potential dangers, how to recognize risky situations, and how to react to them. Use examples and scenarios to help them understand better.
3. Personal Information: Ensure that the child knows their full name, address, phone number, and the name and phone number of parents or guardians in case of emergencies.
4. Trusted Contacts: Provide a list of trusted contacts the child can call in case of trouble, along with instructions not to talk to strangers.
5. Supervision: Keep a watchful eye on the child’s online and in-person interactions. Set time limits for device use and ensure they know how to report uncomfortable or dangerous situations.
6. Routines and Planning: Establish clear daily routines so the child knows what to expect and where to go. If there are changes in plans, communicate them clearly.
7. Online Safety: Educate the child about online dangers, such as sharing personal information, photos, and location. Use parental controls and monitor their online activity.
8. Safe Places: Teach the child about safe places and people to trust if they feel in danger or lost, like the police, a teacher, or a store employee.
9. Emergency Plan: Develop an action plan for emergencies, including how to act in case of separation in public places and how to seek help.
10. Role Model Behavior: Be a role model by practicing safety and self-care in your own life. Show how to approach risky situations calmly and sensibly.
